I liked the time period of this story. Rachel aka Cookie was a very damaged woman. Sadly, I could not feel a lot of compassionate emotions towards Rachel. It is because when she was telling stories of past events like a horrible one, she was so cool about the one particular event that she did not react. In addition, in the past Rachel hung out with the wrong crowd. To me, she came off as a brat. The rest of her friends I could not share a connection with what so ever. Therefore, I was not interested in what truly happened to Bando. Finally, there was Joey. He could have been just another guy in my book. I was kind of upset with him that he did not stop Rachel from drinking. She had a drinking problem in the past and she was past drunk as she was sitting with Joey reliving the past. Yet, he did not really try to stop her. Try as I might, I wanted to like this book. It just was not for me.… (més)

The Secret Letters will keep you page turning, and although based on a sad happening, the death of their Mother, and the surviving children cleaning out her house.
The story focuses a lot on Julie and her sister Pam, and includes Ricky and his girlfriend Star. We get an in-depth look at their family life, and the losses that have affected them all.
As we move along in the story, from the title you can tell, some letters are found, and Julie decides that she is not her fathers child, her mother had an affair around the time that she was conceived, and from this information she now decides that she is part Native American. She takes this information and it changes her life, her life now revolves around buffalo and all things related to being an Indian.
There are a lot of tragic happenings here and there will be times when you wonder if some of these family members will survive? I never saw a lot of what happens in this story coming; you are in for some real surprises here.
I received this book through Pump Up Your Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

The story of a foster child, Mary Fred, and the effect she has on her foster family. Four sections of this book are told from the point of view of a different person, each section having some overlap but mainly carrying the action forward. The final section is again told from Mary Fred's POV and brings it all through a crisis to a happy ending.
Because so much of the book is from the POV of the 2 teens, it was obviously written for YA however I'm not sure how interested that audience would be in the chapter told by the mother and all her thoughts about her ex-husband. Fairly stereotypical characters: petulant teen, slacker uncle. Mary Fred is the different one, having been raised in an apocalyptic religious community which believed in the millenial end of the world (the "Big Cat:)--tho that whole group is also stereotyped. We do see some character changes in Mary Fred and Heather, tho I'm not sure I would call it real growth, and Roy's conversion is unbelievable even tho welcome.
I picked up this book because I have a brother Fred, who always has jokes about his name & is somewhat of a religious fanatic. Maybe I'll pass it on to some of the teens in the family so they can carry forth with new jokes.
