The fourth "Children of the Corn" film takes things in a new direction with the series leaving the urban setting of the third film behind and taking the narrative back to the original small town Midwest setting. The story sees medical student Grace (Naomi Watts) returning home to care for her agoraphobic mother June (Karen Black) who is suffering from grisly nightmares. At the same time the children of the town begin to come down with a strange illness before being recruited into the murderous cult of "he who walks behind the rows". Despite its straight-to-video roots, "The Gathering" is a competently made effort with an interesting story and a number of creepy set-pieces as well as a decent splash of gore. A young Naomi Watts is highly likeable in one of her earliest roles while Karen Black is chilling as the haunted mother. There are plenty of senseless moments and stretches where nothing in particular happens, but overall this is a mildly entertaining film that manages to rise above its straight-to-video roots.… (més)

An insightful look into what the scriptures have to say about Heaven. Written by a pastor who suffered the untimely loss of his teenage son, this book offers hope to any Christian that they will indeed see their believing loved ones once again after this life.

The basic thesis of this book is much needed in the Christian world: to live with one hand in kingdom work (the harvest of souls) and the other in heaven - the feeling expressed by the apostle Paul in Philippians 1:21-24. While the author stated his argument well a few times, he did not keep my interest with the truth of God's word. In fact, his theology seemed quite convoluted at times. The concept he wanted to develop captured my attention but actually fizzled the more I read.

This author was motivated to study heaven after the untimely and tragic death of his teen age son a few years ago.

Overall I found this book to be easy to read and easy to understand. Included was a clear presentation of the gospel.

I found myself frequently thinking about the verse that exhorts us to set our affections on things above (Col. 3:2). This book was a big help to do just that and to get a heavenly mindset in general.

The personal glimpses into the author’s story were refreshing and revealed God’s faithfulness in his life.

Facts about heaven are shared and I found it to be uplifting as I was encouraged to have a future, but very real, hope.

This book seemed more like an appetite whetter than a full blown feast but I did feel encouraged to do further study on this topic.

I also found some things in this book that I would call “balanced”. He has one chapter on the importance of the Word (Bible) in our lives and one chapter on the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives—-balanced. There seemed to also be a balance between talking about having our hearts in heaven and having our hands in the earthly harvest.

Another “plus” I found in this book was that once you anchor your heavenly hopes properly your earthly purpose will become more anchored as well.

This book was not “great” nor “spectacular” but it was definitely at least “good” with all the pluses that I already pointed out. If you have had a tragedy befall you or wish to be prepared spiritually and doctrinally before one does (as it seems to happen to all of us in this fallen world) then this book will certainly help you. This book would also make a good gift to someone else who has gone through a tragedy.
