Stanley Walker was born in Lampasas, Texas, in 1898. He first joined the staff of the New York Herald Tribune as a reporter and rewrite man in 1920, became night city editor in 1926, and served as city editor from 1928 to 1935. After working for a number of other newspapers and magazines in New mostra'n més York and Philadelphia, he returned to Lampasas in 1946, where he continued to write until his death, in 1962. Written in 1933, this is a snapshot of time, when the Roosevelt administration was new, Prohibition was on the way out, anyone could buy a machine gun and the previous decade of the Roaring Twenties was looked back on in wonder. Similar in vein to Asbury's Gangs of New York, Walker takes a tabloid look at the big shots, the losers, the glamorous and the criminal side of life that made up New York's Night Club Era. Many names are recognizable, while most have disappeared from living memory, much as today's Enquirer fodder will fade quite soon. Walker uses the lingo of the time to great effect.… (més)
