Time for a new thread!

ag. 9, 2009, 3:06pm (veure últim)Missatge 2: gregstevenstx

Wouldn't it make more sense to collect the profiles of spammers in a WikiThing article, instead of posting them in conversation threads that 1) are difficult to scan through, 2) eventually get outdated so they can no longer be viewed, 3) cannot be "cleaned up" for duplicates, since people can only delete their own replies?

ag. 9, 2009, 6:24pm (veure últim)Missatge 3: lorax

2>

eventually get outdated so they can no longer be viewed

Er, what? All threads can still be viewed, responded to, etc. They just get shuffled down to the bottom of the list.

ag. 9, 2009, 6:30pm (veure últim)Missatge 4: gregstevenstx

Sorry, I should have been more precise: they get outdated so that they are difficult to view and scroll out of the area where people actually pay attention.

Despite that technical correction, my original question still stands.

Wouldn't it make more sense to collect links to profiles of spammers in a WikiThing article?

If you still want the "publicity" of a topic thread, one could still post conversations about the WikiThing page on here. But as a WikiThing page, you could actually make the information MORE accessible, by (for example) linking to it in your profile, or whereever else, too.

ag. 10, 2009, 3:17am (veure últim)Missatge 5: MarthaJeanne

For some of us 'talk' is very easy, but we aren't comfortable with WikiThing. If a WikiThing page is set up, some of us will either just keep on listing things we find in 'talk' or stop bothering to list them at all.

ag. 10, 2009, 10:08am (veure últim)Missatge 6: gregstevenstx

5: Well, that's fair enough.

I wish I had the time to be the guy who volunteers to transcribe all of the links in these conversations into a wikithing page. Regrettably, I am not that guy.

http://www.librarything.com/topic/69412#...

I'd keep an eye on the account, of course, to make sure it doesn't start getting used to sell books and that the owner doesn't start spamming, but so far they seem to be okay.

Sample post is here:

They're not terribly offensive as these things go, it's the sheer volume and posting in entirely irrelevant groups rather than the content of the post that makes this one stand out.

Perhaps you should be reviewing the new 'Junk' groups as a regular practice. These groups are just cluttering up an already busy website. If you chose not to, perhaps I could bring them to the attention of the membership with a new Group called 'Junk Groups not being Screened by the Administrators' just to get your attention. If you must ignore the Junk, should the rest of us do likewise?

This is someone who's been around a little while, and he's also offering the book on Member Giveaways. Judging from the comments on his profile, most people he's been contacting don't seem to mind being asked. oct. 14, 2009, 1:01am (veure últim)Missatge 107: MerryMary

If I understand correctly - an iffy prospect at best - he thinks that all of us that make contributions to this site are being robbed of rightful compensation for our labors. Tim is fattening his bank account on the backs of the downtrodden members.

Or something.

I do really need to take more exercise so that I can be less of a downtrodden mass.

I take it putosquealy or whatever has never heard of the concept of volunteerism.

He doesn't think we donate our labors quite happily? Has he never heard of hobbies? Social cataloging, generally? Collaborative media? Wikipedia? And the architecture to allow us to create catalogs of our books - that's not worth anything?

I get the impression that it's the combination of users doing volunteer "work" with Tim running a business that's so galling to him. But that's just my interpretation. Ah, whatever...

It is very simple: Tim is enabling our/my addiction to books & my 'volunteering' feeds my addiction/OCD to keeping things orderly & correct.

The fact that I have paid a piddly amount to feed said addiction is my business, not "pequenowhatsis".

Tim provides a service to book addicts everywhere!!

If I don't want to use his service, I don't have to stay.

And I'm not going to any 12-step program to rid myself of said addiction... I can stop whenever I want!!

right.

This appears to be a bookstore listing their inventory; I think that's permitted, but I'm not quite sure where the line is. Are they allowed to list their website on their profile, or to have a normal account rather than an organizational one? Gotta love the name, which is advertising in itself: snagadeal.
http://www.librarything.com/profile/snag...
This one may have been noted before. Is it perhaps the latest incarnation of that bargain books member, with a changed username? At any rate, it's the top listing in Zeitgeist, and if it's an organization, it probably shouldn't be, right?

yeah, store inventory... yuckos

but how is that any different from a bookmoocher listing their inventory here, too? even under a tag or collection? ok, snaggletooth's entire inventory is listed & a bookmoocher has their own books, plus their library...

I spotted and flagged a guy who was blatantly just advertising his book in Book Talk but i seem to have lost the thread or accidentally ignored it so i can't dredge up a link. You may want to reconsider your defense of "about50ayear":

http://www.librarything.com/topic/75554#

"about50" gets abusive when it is politely suggested that Book Talk might not be the best place for off-topic chatter. So much for "Assume good faith". (And those assumptions of good faith, which have created all the off-topic thread, gets used as ammunition in favor of even more off-topic crap on Book Talk.)

About50 claims to have "no time for catalogs", which makes you wonder why LT rather than Facebook or some other purely-social site.

I'm cynically starting to think that anyone who has a username ending in a series of three or more consecutive digits and either no books or books by only one author in their catalog should just be barred from posting. There are a few legit *123 members, but it's not the way to bet, and the "has books" qualification would let them in.

Edited to clarify: I'm not actually serious. That shouldn't need to be said, but given the way "Assume good faith" is used to mean "Assume the worst of long-time members", it may be necessary.

I would like to point out that IP addresses are handled differently in different parts of the world. My ISP assignes one of its IP addresses to me each time I go on-line. But it is not necessarily the same one I had last time, and the number I have today will have been used by others at other times. This is normal here. Banning an IP that is moved around in an ISP would not be a good idea.
