"Free At Last" is the story of Martin Luther King Jr. The book explains his childhood and the way the world worked at that time. This story tells of MLK's life up until his death. This book does a good job of letting children know the state of the race war at that time and is a very important thing for children to know. The first chapter is called "Black in a White World" so it introduces children to the life MLK had to experience and does a good job of not being oppressive. This time in history is very important for children to know so they appreciate what they have more, therefore I highly recommend this book. This is a great book to have students read when they have finished work early and can pull out of their desk and read. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great topic in general for all students to learn about, however when a child reads the information for themselves it turns them into the owner of the information, and they feel as if they have discovered it themselves. This book is also great because it has more words than pictures, but the pictures that are in the book are actual pictures from the events and time period. 1. Main character Martin Luther King, Jr. 2.Write the summary of the book When Martin was born in 1929, it was difficult being a black person in America, especially in the southern states where Martin Lived. Black people were considered inferior to whites, and laws kept them apart. Martin spoke peacefully. People must reject violence against white, he said. A huge crowed turned out. Martin's message was being noticed across America, and in the high places too. On June 11, 1963, President John F. Kennedy made a speech on national television. The president called for equality. He wanted all American citizens to be treated the same, no matter what their color. Martin spent April 4, 1968, quietly in his Memphis motel, making plans for forthcoming march. At about six o'clock Martin stepped onto his balcony. Martin called down to friends, learning on the balcony rail. Suddenly a gun blaze. People rushed forward to give first aid and call an ambulance. But it was no use. Martin died as soon as he reached the hospital. 3. Write the feelings about the book "Are you Martin Luther King?" she asked. Martin said that he was. Suddenly the woman raised her fist. There was letter knife in it! She planged it into Martin's chest.(p19) It was in danger for the people who wanted their equal rights. 4. Write the words, phrases or sentences that impressed you the most in the book and explain why they impressed you. Or you could write your questions about the book. "Many students took part in the sit-ins. They followed nonviolent rules, were polote, and did not strike back if they were abused."(p.20) They were so blave to do against white with nonviolence.
