This wonderful picture biography follows baseball great Willie Mays from his childhood in Birmingham to playing in the Negro Leagues and then the Majors. The book presents Mays’s career as a center fielder for the New York Giants with highlights and statistics in a sidebar ticket format. The story of Willie Mays is truly inspiring. Willie grew up dreaming to be the next Joe DiMaggio. However, blacks weren't allowed to play in the major leagues back then. Instead, Willie played pro with an all black league at only fifteen years old! Eventually blacks were allowed in the major leagues so Willie was signed by the New York Giants where he eventually changed the world with a single catch. This message delivers an inspiring message to kids to never give up and to always give your all. This book is a real grand slam. A real good book, These types of books are always interesting to me, seeing how some of these players get to where they want to go. Overcoming any obstacle in his way Willie Mays was able to become one of the best players to ever play the sport of baseball. During that time as an African American they were not given the opportunity to play professional baseball and even when they began to be allowed to they still were looked down on. so its great to hear the story on how he overcame that and showed the world how great of a player he was. The title of the book asks the question: You Never Heard of Willie Mays?, until now I never heard of Willie Mays. I have never been a big fan of baseball but I have heard of famous baseball players like Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio. I am surprised that i did not know who Willie Mays was. I enjoyed learnig about this outstanding person, he seemed to give many African American people hope for the future. He was an African American man playing for major leagues that at one point did not allow for blacks to play with them. He inspired people and showed them that anything could happen if you try. The book was beautifully written and would be enjoyed by any baseball fan. It is a book to admire and it is a visual treat for young readers. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
