It's the 1990s, before Google maps and cell phones, and three young women get lost, some because they want to. They crisscross the country in this coming-of-age story where peace and love are good intentions until someone gets hurt... KARA escapes from home with a secret she cannot hide much longer and flees deep into the New Mexico wilderness, a seemingly vast place to a simple Midwestern girl. AMY, who has been parenting her drug-dependent mother, falls for an exotic drifter passing through town, becomes love-struck, and decides to follow him on a romantic, inspirational adventure. NATASHA, born into privilege, rebels against her family's expectations and joins the Grateful Dead tour circuit, selling contraband and relishing in her sexual freedom until one bad deal too many catches up with her. When teenaged GRAE climbs into a rusted Volkswagen van hidden on her family's property, she finds journals from the '90s documenting these three women's intertwining journeys. She finally discovers the truth about her mother, along with what really happened over those dramatic six months that connected them all forever, as each woman searched for freedom and found much more than she bargained for...… (més)

An alright mystery, but it felt like a slog- for me to read, and perhaps to write? Just not very enjoyable. I had hoped for more. ( )

This is one of the best books that I have read this year and I could not put it down! It's a story about 3 women on a road trip to see the Grateful Dead while figuring out their lives as women and who they want to become. Their live are woven together and help each other out without knowing it. They find themselves in situations that they have to figure their way out of. The characters are well developed and so is the plot. You are quickly drawn in and you are eager to continue to follow the story. There were many lessons learned in this book and I could not put it down. I would highly recommend it! I received my copy from Library Thing in exchange for an honest review! ( )

I received this book from Library Thing Early Reviewers in exchange for an honest review.

This book is about three young women (Kara, Amy, and Natasha) who decide to get lost and criss cross the country trying to "find themselves" Each of these women are running from their life. They want to find freedom, but they get much more than they bargained for.

When Grae finds the journals in a rusted old Volkswagen van hidden on her property, she discovers the lives of these women. She finds out a shocking truth about her mother.

I found the stories of the different women exciting. I loved the journal writing style of the novel. The fact that Grae was reading it years later made it even more heartbreaking. This book will make people look back on thier own pasts. ( )

The stories of the travels of three young women over the course of a few months in the 1990's (told through a collection of journal entries) was better than I was expecting. The three main characters were believable if not always likable. Some of the secondary characters were a bit one-dimensional. I found their frequently overlapping adventures and just-missed-each-other scenarios to be far-fetched (to be fair I think this is done purposefully by the author). I was worried that the format of journal entries would become tedious, but never found it to be so. According to the book's amazon.com page, the author describes the novel as "a female version of Into the Wild meets Breaking Bad." This is not a bad way to give someone an idea of the story being told-there is hiking, camping, survival skills, and drug use/dealing- but in my opinion, the novel suffers a little from both comparisons. Overall I'd say the novel is well-written, though I didn't love the stories being told. For those who care to know: there is a lot of drug use (pot and pills) and drug dealing in the story. Both violence and sex occur in the novel, but the not too explicitly described. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review. ( )

The whole hippie thing seemed a bit strange considering it's set in the early 90s but I enjoyed this book. The characters were well-drawn and the plot was interesting, reminding us of a time not that long ago where we couldn't so easily contact one another. ( )
