I am on a mission to collect all books illustrated by the Russian born illustrator Bagram Ibatoulline. He is one of my favorite illustrators. This is a story of a coyote looking for food to bring back to her hungry babies. Late at night, with babies who wait in a hollowed out pine tree in an old cemetery, the mama Coyote smells the air for something to fetch back for them.

First, a mouse, then a group of geese, next a rabbit, all flee too quickly. It isn't until she finds a large turkey for prey that the mother coyote can bring this back to her babies.

The end of the book contains information regarding coyotes.

Beautiful life like illustrations of coyotes. The story is about a pack of coyotes and how they hunt. A great picture book with coyote facts at the end of the book.

Interesting point of view that is omniscient, but 'you' are addressed directly in the book. Like the thought of not wanting other animals to die, but the coyote's family to eat too. Would have an interesting discussion with students on this matter.

Written in 2nd person with realistic illistations there are lots of great adjectives, and gives great information on coyotes in a really intriguing way. There is a focus on nature and the circle of life that is really useful for understanding it's not just "the turkey dies" but "coyote's family will eat". The book ends with interesting facts about Coyotes.

Mother coyote slinks through the night looking for food to bring back to her family. After a failed attempt at catching a mouse, geese, and a rabbit, coyote finally catches a turkey to bring back to her family. With full bellies, the coyotes sleep as the sun rises.
