The second book in his critically acclaimed series of Texas Ranger histories, Frederick Wilkins' Defending the Borders narrates a rarely told story of the rangers during the slightly-more-than-a-decade of Texas' history as one of the states of the United States, just before the Civil War ripped asunder the fabric of the federal union which Texas had joined.
