"Based on exhaustive research in the U.S. and South Africa, this book traces the close ties between Mandela, Robeson, and Du Bois--among others--and how their working in tandem with the socialist camp (particularly the Soviet Union and Cuba) was a deciding factor in compelling the retreat of white supremacy in both nations. By 1990 the apartheid regime had freed Mandela and legalized the ANC and its close ally, the South African Communist Party, but these victories occurred just weeks after the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989--as anti-communism surged--and Mandela's forces were weakened in the prelude to the nation's first democratic elections in 1994 and thereafter. Also detailed in this book are allied struggles in Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe, Congo, Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique, along with the massive solidarity movement in the U.S.A.--particularly among unions and students--that contributed mightily to victory. This is a story well worth studying as we fight anti-communism--and struggle for socialism"--Back cover No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
