Probably not for everyone but it leaves me laughing all the time. ( ) This over the top take on Gangsters, Zombies, and 1930' pastiche, is a great read. Never taking itself seriously, it manages to make fun of current events (from 2003 ish), such as the last story, a 3 page spread about a one eyed alien intent on taking over earth. Vibes of M. Shyamalan Signs in this one. Or take the over the top violence, but all the swear words are crossed out- Its a great commentary (or maybe I'm reading to much into this), recommended, but it might not be for everyone. The Goon is ostensibly the enforcer for a gang boss named Labrazio. In reality, he did his boss in and is now running the mob himself with the help of his friend Franky. Don't mistake him for a bad guy. He runs a protection racket that actually protects people. He is the defender of the inhabitants of Lonely Street from the zombies who have taken over the part of the town to the west. The Goon lives in an urban fantasy world set in the 1930s where everyone talks like they are in a Warner Brothers gangster movie. He looks like a cross between Mr. Clean and Joe Palooka, and like Popeye he has a bad eye. He solves his problems with his fists. His short pal Franky looks like a tough version of Wash Tubbs. In case you don't know whom I'm talking about, I will describe him as looking like the bespectacled smart short sidekick that tough guys back then had. As you should have guessed from the genre slot, the Goon's adventures aren't very serious. Eric Powell mixes humor, horror, and urban fantasy, but humor wins. I laughed out loud a couple of times. If I had read it in 2003, I would be praising his imagination more. Alas, it is 2015, and there is nothing much surprising about urban fantasy. I do like the human interest. I actually started this book before Volume 0 (since who would have expected that Volume 1 wasn't the first story). When I encountered a footnote about halfway through, I realized that I was missing some of the backstory. It didn't make any difference. The Goon is still charming as all get out, regardless of where you jump aboard. The "story" is not going to get in the way of your enjoyment.

With Powell's stunning artwork, The Goon's unique mash-up of horror, mob intrigue, and the sickest sense of humor in comics is an instant classic. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
