I've yet to read a Richard Laymon novel I didn't enjoy. This one had a great claustrophobic atmosphere to it, being set in caves beneath a hotel. A group of visitors get stuck in the caves when the elevators are put out of action by a fire in the hotel above and have to wait it out in the hope of being rescued. Part of the group goes off to try and get out through a blocked off section of the caves, but they all soon wish they'd left well alone. Being a Richard Laymon novel, the creep factor of one of the characters(more than one in fact) is off the scale. Kyle is the son of the owner of the hotel and caves beneath, and he's a true perv, lusting after Darcy, one of the guides, before attempting to rape another young woman(just a girl really), and then mistaking her for his own Mum even as he's on top of her.

It's all very fast paced and quite unnerving, but if you've read this author before then you'll know what to expect, and if you haven't, this wouldn't be a bad place to start.

Ethan Mordock und sein Sohn Kyle führen das Mordock Cave Hotel. Das Highlight dieses Hotels: die Mordock Höhlen. Ely Mordock, der damals mit seiner Frau die Höhlen erkundete, ließ einen Abschnitt komplett zumauern, als seine Frau in einen Felsspalt fiel und umkam. Doch die Familie hat ein schreckliches Geheimnis. Das Zimmer 115 ist nur für spezielle Gäste reserviert – besonders hübsche Frauen – an denen Ethan und Kyle ihre kranken Phantasien ausleben können.
Darcy ist mit einer Gruppe Touristen unten in den Höhlen, als der Strom ausfällt und die Aufzüge Feuer fangen. Sie beschließen, sich selbst aus den Höhlen zu befreien und öffnen den Durchgang zu Elys Höhlen…ein Fehler.

Das etwas mit Kyle nicht richtig läuft, wird schnell klar. Aber das dies wohl in der gesamten Familie liegt, wird dem Leser erst nach und nach bewusst. Als Darcy sich mit einer Gruppe Touristen aufmacht, die Mauer zu durchbrechen, bekommt es Kyle mit der Angst zu tun, denn er weiß genau, was sich in Elys Höhlen verbirgt und warum das so ist.
Ein sehr klaustrophobisches Buch, dass mit den Ängsten um das Eingesperrtsein und der totalen Finsternis spielt. Wenn man denkt, es kann nicht mehr schlimmer werden, wird es schlimmer. Und kranker.

Insgesamt ein klar zu identifizierender Laymon, obwohl die Charakterisierung der Hauptpersonen sehr großzügig ausgefallen ist. Es wird viel mit den Muskeln gespielt und der weiblichen Schönheit. Und das bei den Hauptcharakteren fast ausschließlich. Ein zu sehr gewollter Zufall. Wenigstens gibt es eine dicke Frau, deren Haut aus ihren Stützstrümpfen quellt….guten Appetit. ( )

Although this book wasn't a complete disaster, and did contain a few classic Laymon gross-outs, overall the story was thin and not particularly well told.
The initial set up promised more than the plot delivered, so for those new to Laymon I'd recommend starting elsewhere. ( )

Das Buch hat mir sehr gefallen. Aber gegen einige andere Bücher von ihm wirkt dieses hier regelrecht harmlos. ( )

Typical Laymon and not one to read if you are easily offended.

Mordock's cave is split in two parts but only one is open to sightseers, the other was bricked off after an accident over 60 years ago. A tourist party is trapped in the cave and soon panic starts to set in. The race begins between the trapped trying to escape and the rescuers attempting to break in. However the owner of the hotel (that is built above the cave) and his son have a very dark secret.....

As with a lot of Laymon's books the novels has 2 separate storylines that come nicely together for a grand conclusion. Expect a lot of taboo themes to be visited, including incest, rape and plenty of gratuitous violence.

A really good Laymon offering and one that could be easily recommended, just not to the squeamish!
