Harold lamb was, in my opinion, the best story teller of history that ever lived. Yes, he would drift away from the order of events from time to time, which is what good story telling is about. But when you finish a book that he has written you have more information about the main character than you were your ready for--information that may make you want to become a story teller yourself. One of my most prized possession is my authgraphed copy of a first edition book by him entitled: "Tamerlane The Earth Shaker." I enjoyed this book despite its obvious flaws. It's an easy read that gives the basics on Alexander's life but Lamb also, being a historian, does insert interesting tidbits about Alexander's era, particularly a few pages about the rise of the use of money & the problem of coinage before monetary standards (crude though they were) were adopted. If you're willing to follow up on his references, there is more to be learned here than one might otherwise assume..
