Molly has come to live with her great-aunt because her mother is in the hospital. Her next-door neighbor Will is also a stray, living with his grandparents. They form an alliance against a town where everyone knows everyone else, while Molly counts the days until her mother comes back. But there are secrets in town, good and bad.

Peck is better known for his children's historical fiction, but I prefer his YA contemporaries. This isn't his best, but it's well worth reading. ( )
