( ) My inner 13 year old gives Ruby Red five stars. Since I'm actually twice that age (my inner 13 year old says "wow, really?"), I'm going to ding it slightly for an unnecessarily obtuse main character, predictability (I'm... pretty sure I know what all the major plot twists are going to be), and not always grasping the intricacies of time travel. So far so good.. engaging, entertaining, and well paced/written. I've finished! This was a delightful read. Interesting premise, well set up conflicts, characters are well drawn, well paced writing that pulls you through the narrative. It does end somewhat abruptly but gives a nice teaser lead in to novel #2. This seems to be standard for this type of young adult novel in recent years. [the ending abruptly rather than winding up the story so it could - if needed -- stand alone. I suspect the publishing house demands this with an eye to the sales market as it seems to be quite prevalent across the genre] There was also only one major grammar error -- the editors are getting better! If is doesn't sink into the usual teen-angst romance serial in the second novel of the series (or the rest) I suspect this will be a really nice series for young adults. I understand that this was originally published in German. If the author is German I give extra kudos because they have a great grasp of le settings and layout. It is also well translated. Note that my library gave this away last year for some reason so I own this book. 6/10, after reading an ok war book I was hoping that I would enjoy this appealing sci-fi book since I've read and enjoyed plenty of books like this, sadly I didn't because I found some issues and it was just not enjoyable in the first place, where do I begin... It starts off with the main character Gwyneth who is a British girl living her life and everything looks normal except for the fact that everyone still uses DVDs and iPods, yeah I can see why this was given away since it's just too dated now. Only a few pages later something shocking happens when Gwyneth found herself in the same mansion but a different time period and that was confusing at first but soon enough more characters arrive to clear things up. The author just didn't find a way to make the characters and plot enjoyable which was the reason why it was a snorefest. It turned out that Gwyneth is part of some secret time travelling society and there are only 12 families in this since it revolves around 12 gems but still I didn't feel really intrigued. I tried to push myself through the rest of this where Gwyneth continued to time travel to different time periods to meet more characters and the ending wasn't great, there are two more books in the series but I doubt that my library would get them and it was just better if they gave this one away which they did. Sixteen-year-old Gwyneth discovers that she, rather than her well-prepared cousin, carries a time-travel gene, and soon she is journeying with Gideon, who shares the gift, through historical London trying to discover whom they can trust. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
