Told from the perspective of Herman, an independently spirited child suffering from hair loss. The story covers his and others reactions to this in an good-humoured way, but with undercurrents of bullying, family and financial strains, and loss. Whilst a good book, the author's A Half Brother takes the space to expand a similar-feeling story over a longer time period and in more emotional depth. Having read A Half Brother, this feels a little like a rehearsal, but is no less enjoyable for that. ( )
