King George III, by John Brooke (25 Mar 1973) This is an excellent biography, and shows George III in the best possible light. I had often wondered how anyone could defend the British in regard to events before the Revolution. This book does it very well: the colonists were determined not to recognize the principle that Parliament could legislate for them. It is as simple as that. A most worthwhile book. King George III is commonly remembered as the King who lost the American colonies and for little else. He was, however, a great book collector, the founder of the Royal Academy, and a patron of art and science. Furthermore, his ideal of monarchy determined the pattern of the future.
