Ed Ainsworth (1902–1968)

Sam Yorty was the mayor of Los Angeles during the infamous Watts riots. This is his biography and covers much of his early life and events leading up to his election as Mayor, ending while he is still in office. One wonders why it was written at the time it was written, except that I'm pretty sure it was a publicity move to further his political intentions, as it is definitely a "Vote for Sam" sort of tale.
I found the descriptions of political maneuverings and historical events of the state fascinating, but skimmed much of the chapters on the details of LA city functions, controversies and dignitaries. Interesting also that in a survey taken in the '90s, by the University of Illinois, Yorty was rated the third worst U.S. big city mayor since 1960. Something with which the biographer obviously would not agree. However, since it was written in 1965, and much of Yorty's ignominious later political shenanigans had not occurred, perhaps this illustrates another reason biographies should not be written until the life is complete.… (més)
