Bought this while in Istanbul and found it a great accompaniment to visiting the sultan's harem.Wonderful paintings, photos of palace, clothes and jewellery and much information on the lifestyle of the concubines and their efforts to rise in the ranks to be wives. Weddings, births, the eunuchs and the life stories of some of the most interesting royal characters make this a fascinating read.

Incidentally, I love the Turkish translator's renderings of some phrases. One sultana was a "foxy playful belle" whose target was to have her"chemical sons" sit on the throne… (més)
