Clarence E. Anderson

Trvalá záliba tohoto Kaliforňana v létání začala v devadesátých letech minulého století, kdy viděl létat nad farmou svého otce letouny. V lednu 1942 se přihlásil do programu výcviku kadetů armádního leteckého sboru. Když později získal pilotní odznak - stříbrná křidélka – a létal na Bell P-39 Airacobra, vybrali ho jako jednoho z prvních lídrů letky v nové 357. stíhací skupině. Skupina vyzbrojená novými smrtonosnými letouny North American P-51 Mustang sestřelila při doprovodech bombardérů na cíle hluboko v Německu pět nepřátelských letounů na jeden svůj ztracený. Ale byla to vysoká cena. Polovina jejích pilotů včetně několika Budových blízkých přátel zahynula nebo byla zajata.
Bud Anderson vstoupil v únoru 1944 do nejistého, vzrušujícího a životu nebezpečného světa leteckého boje. Za necelý rok odlétal proti luftwaffe dva bojové turnusy. V bitvách, do nichž byly někdy zapojeny stovky letounů, patřil ve skupině se šestnácti sestřely mezi přední esa. Ve své Staré vráně odlétal 116 misí, a přes jeden střet na život a na smrt za druhým ho nikdy nezasáhl nepřátelský letoun, ani se z ní předčasně z jakýchkoliv důvodů nevrátil.
Jeho přítel Chuck Yeager, který s Andersonem v 356. stíhací skupině létal, řekl: „Ten chlap byl nejlepší pilot, jakého jsem kdy viděl.“
Budova práce zkušebního pilota byla přinejmenším stejně riskantní. Při jednom bizarním experimentu se za letu připojoval křídlo na křídlo k bombardéru Boeing B-29 Superfortress. Při jiném testu letěl s proudovou stíhačkou, která vzlétla z obřího bombardéru Convair B-36 Peacemaker a zase se na něj vrátila. Stejně jako za válečných bojů ztratil při podobných letových zkouškách mnoho svých přátel.
Bud velel v poválečné Koreji letce proudových letounů North American F-86 Sabre a v polovině šedesátých let na Okinawě stíhacímu křídlu Republic F-105 Thunderchief. V roce 1970 létal jako osmačtyřicetiletý velitel křídla na útoky proti komunistickým zásobovacím trasám.
