Association Of Baptists For World Evangelism

It was the summer of 1927. After 25 years of ministry in the Philippines, Dr. Raphael Thomas was in the United States. He and his wife had resigned from their mission abroad, concerned about theological issues and restrictions placed upon the evangelistic outreach which complemented his dedicated work. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas, and three coworkers in agreement with them, believed that God would have them continue to serve in the Philippines. What should they do? A friend of missions, Mrs. Marguerite Doane, invited a few concerned friends to visit her summer home at Watch Hill, Rhode Island, to discuss this crisis. They crowned the discussion with a time of prayer. Out of this prayer meeting came the united conviction that God would have them do something constructive. The time had come for action. A new missionary society should be formed. Officers were selected, funds were promised, and a name was chose: "The Association for Baptists for Evangelism in the Orient." Thus was born what would become the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE), and the journey began a journey that has covered 75 years and is still going forward.
