Firstly, apologies to the author. I thought I had already written the review but, after a long hiatus, I have returned to LibraryThing to find I didn't review it. I normally don't like to read books about war but the advert for this one grabbed me. I am very interested in relationships between people, what makes people tick and how they behave in difficult and traumatic circumstances. So, from this perspective, I found Bao's story interesting, although I agree with other reviewers that it seemed a bit light-on in detail at times, especially in regards to her self-awareness. I was left unsure whether she learned much from her experiences and changed as a result or if she continued to suffer a post-traumatic-syndrome existence and unable to integrate any of her experiences. i suspect it was the writing of the book which acted as a catharsis for her - Indeed I hope so. Overall it was an interesting read and a good reminder of some of the difficulties faced by women in domestic violence situations - all the more horrid if one also finds oneself in the midst of a raging war.… (més)
I found this book very interesting. I have never really read about the Vietnam War before. I enjoyed reading how normal people try to live their lives while a war is happening around them but I do wish there was a little more detail there. I agree with some other reviewers that it would be really interesting to learn more about her life in the US once she emigrated.
I received this book a while ago, but I found it difficult to approach solely because I have read other war-based memoirs and generally find they weigh on me. This one didn't, and perhaps its because it didn't feel well rooted in the events of the war, but rather swirls through them. Yet it's a very personal story of a survivor (and not just of war - of other tumultuous events/relationships) that is ultimately uplifting.
Although it is apparent that Bao's first language is not English, she created a story that was interesting reading. I'm glad that she was motivated to write this story, and with more editing (taking out some of the cliché language) this could be a real winner. I knew life during the American War in Viet Nam was challenging, and Bao's story makes me realize how strong the Vietnamese people were.
