Sobre l'autor

Nevada Barr was born on March 1, 1952. She is the author of a series of mysteries involving national parks. She draws on her own experience as a National Park Service ranger to thrill readers with the majesty of nature. Anna Pigeon, the heroine of such novels as A Superior Death and Endangered mostra'n més Species, is a rough-and-tough ranger who left the wilds of New York for the great outdoors, and is modeled after Barr. Barr began writing in 1978, garnering national attention with the publication in 1993 of Track of the Cat, which won both the Agatha and Anthony awards for Best First Mystery Novel. Nevada Barr is a mystery fiction author, known for her "Anna Pigeon" series of mysteries, set in National Parks in the United States. She grew up in Johnsonville, California. In 1984 she published her first novel, Bittersweet, a bleak lesbian historical novel set in the days of the Western frontier.

"13 1/2" by Nevada Barr
recounts the story of Dylan, an 11-year-old boy convicted in 1971 of murdering his family with a hatchet, sparing only his older brother Rich, who was severely injured. He is dubbed "Butcher Boy." Polly, fleeing an unimaginably abusive home at 15, makes her way to New Orleans. As an adult, she encounters Marshall Marchand and falls in love with him, as do her two daughters. However, she soon discovers that Danny, Marshall's brother, appears to be overly controlling. Appearances can be deceiving.… (més)

Anna Pigeon is a ranger with the National Park Service. In this second book in the series she is stationed at Isle Royale National Park on Michigan’s Lake Superior, a remote spot popular with diving enthusiasts. The central mystery is the death of a man found at the base of a 50-year-old shipwreck. Circumstances indicate this was more than just a dive gone wrong. The FBI is called in to investigate possible ties to the drug trade, but Anna isn’t buying that theory. She examines the means and motives of a variety of people, from the victim’s wife to National Park Service employees to locals. This held my interest for a while but eventually the whole thing became too convoluted, and Anna’s “aha moment” identifying the perpetrator was far-fetched. I like the unique setting of these books, but that’s not enough to hold my interest in the series.… (més)

This was one of the most disappointing books I've read in a very long time. Filled with unnecessary descriptions, mediocre characterization, and a romance that is forced at the reader rather than gradually developed for most of the story, this book falls short of every expectation the description stirred in me. If I hadn't have spent money on this book, I would never have finished it.

Temporarily working as a presuppression firefighter on Cumberland Island, GA, for three weeks, Anna was ready to soak up the sun, breathe the fresh ocean air, and witness the hatching of the endangered baby loggerhead turtles while raking in some much-needed overtime pay. But, after a fatal plane crash on the island, she finds herself investigating a possible murder as an NPS law enforcement officer. Surrounding her is another cast of quirky, semi-strange co-workers who seem to flock to the National Park Ranger positions. The plot in this fifth book in the series—laced with magnificent descriptions of the local wildlife and landscape—is captivating and suspenseful as Anna gets beat up, attacked by ticks and chiggers, then nearly killed while trying to bring down a killer. Good to the last page.… (més)
