Modesty matters, but not like we think. Many women have an enormous amount of agency in choosing what they ear or don't wear, in a variety of social contexts. Women can conscientiously signal, via symbolic dress, that their sexuality is only a piece of their personhood.

I wonder if at the root of our internet outrage is the need to show that we are more righteous than others. Outrage is like a lot of other things that feel good but, over time, devour us from the inside out. Outrage begins to eat us alive when it is not channeled into creative love. It does not produce the righteousness we seek. I wonder if at the root of our Internet outrage is the need to show that we are righteous--specifically, more righteous than others.
