Galina Petrovna’s Three-Legged Dog Story by Andrea Bennett is both a comedy and a political satire on Russia. The author is drawing on her own experience as she lived in Russia during the 1990s when the Soviet system was going through many changes and things became very chaotic.

This story takes place in 1994 when elderly Galina Petrovna’s three legged dog has been grabbed by the zealous local dog-catcher, social misfit Mitya, known as the Exterminator. Retired teacher Vasya, who has a soft spot for Galina, tries to help her but ends up getting himself arrested. But Galina’s best friend Zoya has connections which sees the two elderly ladies heading off to Moscow to visit Zoya’s cousin to request his help in gaining the release of both Vasya and the three-legged dog.

As the story plays out we are taken on a tour of Russia at that time. From food, to clothing, occupations and amusements we are given a bird-eye view of Russian culture. The writing is at times humorous, at others tragic as the comic tale unfolds and the disorder of Russia is exposed. This somewhat surreal story was a different and fun read that was both eccentric and poignant.

An absolutely charming story. This book was Goodreads Giveaway which I picked up and devoured as soon as it arrived.

This is a comic story of an old woman's quest to save both her dog and her friend, with help and hindrance various other colourful and eccentric characters. Set in the early post-Perestroika era, the protagnists gradually reveal their secrets and histories as they compare the past to the present.

Using a light touch and some wonderful descriptions, the story bounds along, making it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
