Time travel can be such a tricky thing - especially when you're trying to do good and keep your family together at the same time. There's so much going on in this story, but if you're familiar with the first book, it's not too hard to keep track of the various story lines running. There was never a dull moment, and it was easy to quickly step back through time and get wrapped up in the story. With vivid imagery, deception, and peril around every corner with a little love and steam mixed in, this was a thrilling new addition to the Indigo series.… (més)

The story starts out innocently enough - Esther wanting to repair her failing marriage, and a mysterious inheritance. The plot quickly picks up as her husband's experiments with time travel propel her backwards to a time when slavery was common, and social norms were much different from today. The characters were all interesting, with their own complexities. This isn't a simple time-travel romance, but an engaging, complex read that will hook you from the start. Highly recommend if you're interested in a romance with a twist.… (més)

This is the thrid book in the Amanda Lester, Detective series. One thing I will say is that it is very important that you read these books in order. I read the first one, then this one and there were several spots that I read and had no idea what they were talking about as it was something from the second in the series. I also did not like this one as much as the first and will explain later in the review why.

The story takes place at Legatum (the detective school) but it is during summer vacation. Amanda stays on school instead of returning to her parents or to LA to help her film idol Darius Plover at the request of Headmaster Threadkill. She contacts her friends and they come back to help her. There are several mysteries that need solving including solving a murder, locating the "Detective Bible", finding several missing students and of course catching the dastardly Blixus Moriarity. While all this is going on, she is writing and rewriting scenes for her producer mentor Darius Plover. There are some red herrings thrown in and this time, she does not have to sneak out of school as her mission is sanctioned by the headmaster. The school staff are mutinying and splitting of to start their own school. Of course, they also have the purple rainbows to deal with. What are they? Who is making them? Are there really pots of gold at the end of these rainbows? Will they find their friends/relatives/schoolmates who are missing? Will Legatum self-destruct or will the staff rally and come back? Who is behind the murders? There are so many questions in this book it is hard to keep track of them.

The character interactions in this book was one of the things that bothered me. They were not very nice to each other, there was some back-stabbing involving boy/girl relationships and they put themselves in a lot of danger. Some of the dialogue was sniping and criticizing one another. When Amanda has to work with her sort of ex-boyfriend, Scapulus Holmes, there is a lot of tension. She still has feelings for him, but he is upset with her because he thinks she has feeling for Nick Moriarity. Amphora, one of her roommates, also is trying to begin a relationship with him and there are some hard feelings and rivalry between the girls. When Amanda is kissed by another boy, she feels something that she is not sure of. Oh dear, the teen drama is at an all time high, and that's not a bad thing in a book geared to young teens. It is believable glimpse into the mindset of a teen girl dealing with blossoming emotions. Amanda is a character who often acts logically but sometimes, especially with matters of the heart, does not. She has difficulty with social skills and can be very bossy, this can cause problems with her friends. She is as conflicted as any real teen girl and is dealing with several issues: parental divorce, new school, boyfriends and the fact that she has been given heavy responsibilities. She does not always act according to the script and teens will identify with that. The supporting characters are also dealing with their own issues, such as Ivy and her blindness as well as her allergy to bees. She is the peace-maker in the group. Simon and Clive both trying to find their place in the group and at school. Amphora who is the big flirt, but is she really feeling inferior to Amanda. Many dynamics in the group.

I give this book 3.5 stars. The ending was rather abrupt, but of course, now you have to read the next book in the series. I do recommend this series to young teens as I believe they will be able to identify with the characters and it is good clean fun.

Twelve year old Amanda Lester is a descendant from G. Lestrade, a detective that worked with Sherlock Homes. Her father, Herb, is a detective and her mother, Lila, is a well-known author of detective novels. Is it any wonder that Amanda wants nothing to do with the detective world. She wants to make movies and living outside Los Angeles is the place to do it, that is until the family moves to the UK and she is enrolled in a secret school for detectives. Only descendants of famous detective families are allowed in, but Amanda wants out, until ....

The school seems rather strict and she has no choice what team she is on or who her roommates will be but she has lucked out. When they find blood droplets, pink sugar, the garage explodes and the cook gets murdered, Amanda and her friends are up to their eyeballs in clues to solve the mystery. But, is this a real crime or just part of the elaborate crime set up each year for the students to solve. When Amanda's father disappears, she begins breaking the rules to save him.

Move over Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon, this is an updated to the twenty-first century female buddy crime solving series. Amanda's friends are loyal and smart, her nemesis is handsome and sometimes smart. She uses both her detecting skills and her movie knowledge to find clues to solve the mystery. Her friends stick by her even when she is wrong and does not tell them what is going on. She learns to trust others and use their skills as well as her own.

I thought the cast of kids that make up Amanda’s circle of friends were well done and entertaining. There’s just enough drama, puppy love, and special skills between the lot of them to draw in a young reader. There’s also a good bit of danger. There were some spots that seemed a little long and too drawn out, but overall the plot was engaging and moved well. After the story, there’s a listing of famous sleuths, both fictional and real, and their claims to fame as well as a list of book club questions for young readers. The beginning of the book included information such as the types of classes etc which I believe would have worked better at the end of the book. To be honest, I skimmed them and went back and looked at them later in the book.

This would be a great series for girls looking for a hero or role model in the 9 to 12 year old range. It might pull in some of the boys as well.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
