For me, going grocery shopping is more like planning a minor military campaign. Look up sales... clip coupons... plan driving routes to save gas. If we are to survive, every penny counts. But I also want my meals to taste good. So I LOVE this cookbook. My Great-Grandparents came to this country with nothing, and yet to hear my Grandpa's tales, times where better, the air smelled sweeter and the food tasted so much better. And from the collection of recipes in this cookbook, you will soon see it's true. Many of the recipes call for the simplest ingredients ( and here we are talking "eggs" and "milk" and not "tuna steaks" or "chicken breasts"). This is the "how to feed you husband and kids and still have money left over" cookbook. The food is simple and many of the dishes have been forgotten to modern American cooks... but the taste!!! You'll know why Grandpa thought fondly of his childhood dinners! And you'll get a feeling of well-being as you try your hand at making your own noodles or starting your own sourdough starter. The recipes, like the immigrants who brought them, come from all over the world and many have charming names:
Buttons( a pasta ), Greek Diples (roses)(a pastry), Walnut Noodles. And many have there original names... Bleenies and Kugel, Ole Kooken, La Crema Italiana. Mixed with the recipes are the pictures, history, and stories of Ellis Island and those who went through its gates. Even if you never cook a thing, the book is an enjoyable read and after seeing the world through the eyes of the immigrants, suddenly you become aware of how much you truly do have.
