Debra E. Bernhardt, May 9, 1953 - March 22, 2001 Debra E. Bernhardt was born on May 9, 1953 to civilian employees of the U. S. Army in Nuremberg, West Germany. She was raised in Iron River, Michigan and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. She went on to get her master's mostra'n més from Wayne State University and received one of the first doctorate's in Public History from New York University. Bernhardt is perhaps best known for her book "Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives", which chronicles the histories of working New Yorkers. As part of her college dissertation, Bernhardt produced and eight part series for National Public Radio entitled "New Yorkers at Work". In 1995 she was awarded with the John Commerford Award, the highest honor from the New York Labor History Association, and in 2001 she received the Distinguished Service Award from the New York City Central Labor Council. Due to Bernhardt's efforts, Union Square Park in New York City was declared a national historic landmark by the National Park Service, as it was the site of the first ever Labor Day parade. At the time of her death, Bernhardt was the head of the Tamiment Library and the Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at NYU.
