In the summer of 1940, war is raging across Europe.
Roger Hallowes, and his cousins James and Christopher Fenton, both pilots in the RAF, live in a world of comradeship and tragedy.
Roger struggles to keep his crew intact, as it seems an uncomfortable number of planes are destined to end up in the sea.
James takes on ever increasing responsibility as his unit loses Commanding Officers.
Quickly, Christopher gains a reputation for reckless behaviour, and must face the consequences.
Romance and friendship must take a back seat as the war wages on.
Their lives are full of adventure, suspense, laughter and pathos.
‘A Time for Haste’ finds the young protagonists entrenched in the life of the RAF at war, reeling from losses at the Battle of Britain, and with no end to the fighting in sight.
‘A Time for Haste’ is the second part of the Daedalus Quartet, a series full of the details learned from first-hand experience, a historically accurate framework, and impeccable technical detail. Trial By Fire (previously published as The Gifts of Jove) is the first book in the Daedalus Quartet.
Richard Townshend Bickers volunteered for the RAF on the outbreak of the second world war and served, with a Permanent Commission, for eighteen years. He wrote a range of military fiction and non-fiction books, including the first part of the Daedalus Quartet ‘Trial by fire’, as well as ‘Torpedo Attack’, ‘My Enemy Came Nigh’, ‘Bombing Run’ and ‘Summer of No Surrender’.

Calcutta, 1824.
The 69th Regiment of the Bengal Army under Hugh Ramsey has just mutinied.
They believe that the boat taking them upriver will take them too far: by crossing the sea, they will lose caste, a sacrilege to their religious sanctity.
Disillusioned by the action of his soldiers and his poor prospect for riches, Ramsey resigns his post to set off in search of his fortune along with two of his Sepoy’s.
Ramseys’s trading partner, Angus MacLean, sends him on a danger filled journey to the distant state of Zafarala, ruled by a corrupt Muslim Nawab.
Battling thugs and river pirates, his journey becomes entwined with that of an American banking family, Henry, Constance and Ruth Whittaker who plan to persuade the Nawab to stop extorting money from the farmers in tax, and to invest it with them instead.
His adventure also becomes embroiled with that of Shakuntala, a renowned dancer who was forced to run away after the death of her husband. Now she is returning to Zafarala.
But when they arrive, the group are faced with strange and dangerous events that threaten their fortunes, and their lives.
War is threatened from the neighbouring state, involving Ramsey's old regiment. Can he prevent the initiating actions before it’s too late?
‘A Good Soldier’ is an epic military saga set against the backdrop of 19th century India.
Praise for Richard Townhsend Bickers:
A valuable history of the air war that began it all … by an ex-flyer of the Second World War who has a genuine feeling for the feats of his predecessors’ - THE BIRMINGHAM POST
‘His sympathy with the fighting man (and woman) shines out of every page’ - LIVERPOOL DAILY POST
Originally published as ‘The Sands of Truth’.

A very comprehensive story of Britain's best ground attack airplane of WW2. Started out as a fighter and failed; then was repurposed as a fighter bomber and was very successful. Difficult to fly, it killed many pilots. Similar in profile and difficult to distinguish from the FW 190, it was often a victim of friendly fire from AA and Allied warplanes. It had a short and brilliant life as did many of its pilots.
