A cute ABC book with many interesting animals that I had never heard of before, or never seen a picture of. There is a note at the beginning that zoo-born animals help scientists study them and better help animals in the wild. Truthfully, it's not my favorite ABC book. Some pages have interesting facts about the animals but several are general, bland comments about what the animal is doing in the picture. I would prefer that every page have an interesting fact related to the animal, since that's what the book claims that zoo-borns do - help scientists study them and gain more information about them.… (més)

All three of my kids have enjoyed this book thoroughly. Besides giving scientific names for all the species which leads to a fun discussion of taxonomy on animals, it is a great aid for starting a discussion on how languages are related and used. Also, there is more concentrated "Awwww" in one book than any other in our collection. I think this is important because it teaches children an empathy for these powerful predators. It also highlights the conservation efforts of Zoos all over the world. This is important as zoos in general have a rather bad reputation these days.
Index was a 2/3 terms that I wanted to look up so that's a pass. Honestly, this is a great lure for very young children to get them into reading. Only let them proceed to the next cute picture AFTER they read the caption.
The book succeeds at its purpose which is to be a photographic essay on small animals born in captivity.… (més)
