Howard Blum (born in 1948) is an American author and journalist. Blum earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, where he also received an M.A. in government in 1970. He was formerly a reporter for the The Village Voice and The New York Times, where he earned two Pulitzer Prize nominations. Since 1994 he has been a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. Blum has also authored several non-fiction books, including the New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner: American Lightning: Terror, Mystery, the Birth of Hollywood, and the Crime of the Century. Howard Blum has been a contributing editor at Vanity Fair since 1994. His articles for the magazine have included in-depth reports on the murder of Helen Brach, the activities of rogue Hollywood detective Anthony Pellicano, and the story of two New York City police detectives who were hit men for the Mob. Several of his pieces have been optioned for film. Before joining Vanity Fair, Blum spent eight years as a reporter at The New York Times, earning two nominations for a Pulitzer Prize. His articles have also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, New York, and Life, among other publications. Blum is the author of nine books, including Gangland: How the FBI Broke the Mob (Simon & Schuster, 1993), Wanted! The Search for Nazis in America (Quadrangle/New York Times Book Co., 1977), and The Gold of Exodus: The Discovery of the True Mount Sinai (Simon & Schuster, 1998). His new book, American Lightning, will be published in September 2008. Blum resides in Connecticut and in Sag Harbor, New York.
