Their parish priest mentions people experience miracles that cure their illnesses by going to the Martyrs Shrine in Midland, Ontario. Tom's sister Carrie decides to travel Midland and see if they can receive a miracle to replace their barn. As a former devote Catholic who visited the Martyrs Shrine as a youth with my parents and grandparents, the satirical descriptions of the Shrine and the many folks who went there hoping for a miracle really struck home. I remember the racks of crutches and canes on the wall of the church left by people who claimed to have been cured. In this story, there is chaos when three people all claim to have been cured at the same time leading to humour for the reader but also a dilemma for the Catholic Church.
Boyle's technique in supplying humour is very subtle and sneaks up on the reader and for me in many instances made me laugh out loud.… (més)
