A longtime editor of books for both children and adults, Hugh Brewster is also the author of some acclaimed works for young readers. Born in London in 1950, Brewster was an editor for both Scholastic Books and Scholastic Canada before becoming editorial director for Madison Press Books in Toronto mostra'n més in 1984. Brewster's book Anastasia's Album (1996), was about the youngest daughter of Nicholas II and Alexandra, the last tsar and tsarina of Russia, who were killed along with their children by Bolsheviks in 1918. Brewster researched the work in Moscow's state archive, where he found Anastasia's translated diaries and hand-colored letters among the papers and photo albums of the tsar's family. Brewster has also written Inside the Titanic (1997), a lavishly illustrated book which uses the story of two young passengers to explore the doomed ocean liner. Titanic de Hugh Brewster
Lejos de ser la típica historia sobre el hundimiento del Titanic, este libro indaga por primera vez en la sociedad que iba a bordo del barco de lujo y que se hundió para simbolizar el tránsito al siglo XX. El autor narra, con admirable pulso narrativo, la historia íntima del naufragio, con el entramado social, político y económico que sustentaba al efímero prodigio. Vemos desfilar a las grandes fortunas europeas y norteamericanas del momento "los Astor o los Guggenheim", a artistas, periodistas y escritores, conocemos la moda de la época a través de una de las grandes damas de la alta costura e incluso se nos muestra el equipamiento tecnológico del barco, pionero en su época. A book one reads and rather quickly forgets.
Well documented bios of the First Class passengers, as well as bios of certain Crew Members, the Captain, etc. Numerous
photos - all in B&W- are well presented to show the fashions, and decor of the day. Experiences aboard the Carpathia and upon arrival in New York finish the main story. Excellent resources for further reading are included in the back of the book, as well as further info on already introduced Personell. Not the best source for the Titanic, but very well written, and informative. Recommended for History buffs!… (més)

There are probably several books out there doing a beter job of introducing these princesses to kids (the Royal Diaries series comes to mind) and getting them to ´connect´ with these historical figures.
On the other hand, the texts are concise, and a decent introduction to both the princesses and non-fiction reading, even though it only scratches the surface on both.
Not very effective, however, if you want to break the Disney-bewitchment.
That the selected bibliography suggests 4 books by Carolly Erickson, who is known to be a bit... cavalier with her historic facts and sources, also casts a bit of a shadow on this tome.… (més)
