American Born, by Rachel M Brownstein, is an engaging and heartwarming memoir (and biography) that highlights the life of an immigrant. In this case, a mid-twentieth century immigrant, but the story has contemporary parallels.

While this is certainly a story about an immigrant to the United States and what that status (sorta, since she was actually born in the US) means, it is first and foremost a loving story about a mother and her daughter. The moments most readers can relate to will cause a lot of nostalgia, especially for older readers (like myself).

In addition to a wonderfully descriptive biomemoir, we learn a lot about how language (from what is said to how it is said) helps an immigrant community both retain identity while also finding a path into being an "American," whatever that exactly means.

Stepping away from the specific details, a Jewish immigrant last century, any reader will likely recognize the value in familial stories and how much they may, even without knowing it, affect who we have become.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy the hybrid of a biography and a memoir, especially one that highlights difficulties that persist to this day for someone to be and express themselves genuinely. The people will stay with you after reading the book and you may very well have the urge to call/visit your own relatives.

Really an insightful analysis of women in literature. Brownstein asserts that "a heroine, like a novelist, can convert the
least promising of lives into art by the way she looks at it." Of the literary criticism with a feminist bent, this is one of the best.
