Sobre l'autor

A fellow of St. Catherine's College, Oxford University, and a former administrator of the university, Alan Bullock established himself as a historian with the publication of his biography of Adolf Hitler: A Study in Tyranny (1952). Although he had the advantage of being the first person to write a mostra'n més scholarly study of the German leader, his work remains one of the best, if not the best, biography of the dominant political personality of the first half of the twentieth century. Bullock also produced a major work in British history, The Life and Times of Ernest Bevin (1960-1983), a three-volume biography of the British transport-union leader and foreign secretary. He also has written a number of books on broad themes and was coeditor of the Oxford History of Modern Europe. His latest work, Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives (1992) compares the two great dictators at different stages of their lives. (Bowker Author Biography) mostra'n menys

Pretty good biography of Hitler, probably the best of the early ones. Interesting details. I skimmed parts of the second half, because of too much detail. Gets into the nihilistic natures of Hitler and Goebbels at the end of their lives and the war. He was quite the "wizard" in getting others to believe in him.

This is an excellent book. Bullock does an excellent job in his dual biography of arguably the two people who had the most influence on the 20th century.

Bullock places the two men side by side, sometimes in the same chapter, sometimes in successive chapters, and sometimes at the same time chronologically, while others at the same phase in their lives. By allowing himself the flexibility of switching between these two options, it allows him to compare and contrast these two men.

The other aspect of his work that I really enjoyed was Bullock does engage previous scholarship, and the various ways historians have grappled with understanding both these men and the oppressive systems they created, without it becoming cumbersome. Those that really want to dig into the historical debates can find sources in his notes, while those that really don't want to dig, can read an accessible, if long, one volume work about both Hitler and Stalin.… (més)
