Harry Carr (1900–1983)

“Bro.Carr was one whose brilliance as a lecturer outshone that of most of us and he was an expert not only in persuasion but in telling his audiences what they wanted to hear. He give the impression that it was rather sacrilegious to question the gospel of Harry Carr and his attitude brought forth the passage which I once wrote after we disagreed on some controversial but fundamental point : ‘Once a belief has become imprinted upon a man’s mind it usually takes exclusive possession…’ In this, his last book, Bro.Carr gives renewed life to the theme of 600 years of Craft ritual and thereby illustrates the above contention. For this idea although superficially plausible, is misleading and in danger of all too easy acceptance. Furthermore, it is a simply step to the belief that speculative Masonry is also 600 years old…The implication is that the Freemasonry with which we are familiar began to take shape in the 14th century, but we delude ourselves if we imagine that the organizational activities of stonemasons in the late Middle Ages form part of a continuous process extending right down to the present day customs of Free and Accepted Masons, who fundamentally have no direct connection whatever with the building trades….Much space has been devoted in this review to what I have long argued is the fallacy of suggesting that the masonic fraternity of today has grown in a continuous process from the late 14th century. We would all like it to be so but the improbabilities, and in some instances downright impossibilities, are too great to be ignored. The certainties against are too significant to lead us to such a conclusion. The remainder of the book, which contains other controversial matter, will not here be dissected. But by and large it will be of great interest to all who revere the memory of an outstanding mason and scholar.”… (més)

“Als eerste belangrijke instructieboek mag nogmaals genoemd worden Bernard E. Jones’ ‘Freemasons’ Guide and Compendium’ aangevuld door zijn ‘Freemasons’ Book of the Royal Arch’…Het werk ‘The Freemason at Work’ is opgebouwd uit [200] vragen en antwoorden, zorgvuldig geformuleerd en beantwoord op een zodanige wijze dat velen, ook buiten de Engelse werkwijze, hierdoor geïnstrueerd worden. Deze instructie is mogelijk omdat Carr bij zijn beantwoording ‘altijd iets meer aanbood dan de vrager had gevraagd’.Met welke vragen is men naar voren gekomen? Er blijken enkele categorieën te zijn : 1.procedurevragen over zaken waarover geen officiële richtlijnen van de Grootloge zijn uitgegeven en waarvoor in ritualen geen of onvoldoende aanwijzingen worden verstrekt; onder te verdelen in 1.1. vragen naar de betekenis en de procedure; en 1.2. vragen naar de juiste werkwijze in die gevallen waarin twee of meer verschillende versies van het rituaal of uitvoeringen van de ritus worden aangetroffen. Daarnaast is er nog wat sprokkelwerk van meer encyclopedische of biografische aard, zoals vragen naar het vrijmetselaarschap van Sir Winston Churchill en de Hertog van Windsor…Het moge duidelijk zijn dat het boek van Harry Carr een waardevolle aanwinst is in de maçonnieke literatuur en onschatbare diensten kan bewijzen bij de instructie, ook buiten het Engelse gebied.”

“The first volume of The Collected Prestonian Lectures published in 1965, was edited on behalf of Quatuor Coronati Lodge by the late Bro.Harry Carr. As its reviewer, Bro.A.R.Hewitt, then said, ‘Never before have writings of so many great names in masonic research been brought together between the covers of one book’. It was such a success that a revised impression was published within two years. A similar comment can truthfully be passed about this second volume because in all respects except the number of lectures included – fourteen as against twenty-seven in the first volume – it is as valuable a contribution to any collection of masonic writings as its predecessor…Again, the subjects of the lectures are of considerable diversity – the biographical, the legendary, the historical, the architectural, the ceremonial, the mystical, the dramatic – sufficient to captivate a diversity of minds.”

“The Lectures are important inasmuch as they are the only ones held under the authority of the United Grand Lodge of England. All three volumes should, therefore, be on the bookshelves of every thinking freemason, but this volume is of particular importance if only for the 1982 Lecture ‘The Government of the Craft’ by R.W.Bro.Sir James Stubbs, K.C.V.D.,P.S.G.W. …”… (més)
