I'm not usually a fan of stories involving royalty or empires, but I was very pleasantly surprised that the Sinclairs we meet in this book don't resemble the stereotypical privileged ruling class in the usual predictable way. The author has woven in a very appealing extra dimension that not only makes them relatable but also incorporates some very tasty elements essential to grab the attention of science fiction fans. The world building is also superbly done.

Ability is Book 9 in the To Be Sinclair series, but is the first book I've read so far, so I will undoubtedly have missed some back story and introductions to various cast members. I therefore don't know if any of Ability's characters have already made an appearance but, apart from getting a little confused at times with so many names popping up throughout the story, I didn't feel as if I should have read any of the other books first.

I did find the pacing a bit slow at times, but once I got to the pointy end of the story, and a very clever and satisfying twist to account for the "hellbeast", I was quite engrossed and silently lending support to Brielle and Zak.

Brielle is an awesome heroine and she was very easy to like. Zak is definitely not your typical alpha hero, which was refreshing in itself, but the complexity of his personality and experiences made his journey all the more heart warming, especially with Brielle catching a ride with him.

Not forgetting the all-important romantic element, Ability isn't as sexy as I usually like, but Brielle and Zak's growing relationship and their HEA more than made up for that. I'd really love to read more about these two.

A big thumbs-up too for excellent proofreading, which is often neglected or poorly done in the independent publishing arena. A pleasure to read for this persnickety reader.
