Jack L. Chalker was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 17, 1944. He received a B. A. degree in English from Towson University and a graduate degree in English and history from Johns Hopkins University. Before becoming a full-time writer in 1978, he taught history and geography in the mostra'n més Baltimore public school system. He founded a publishing house, The Mirage Press, Ltd., which produces nonfiction and bibliographic works on science fiction and fantasy. He was the author of several science fiction series including the Well World series, the Dancing Gods series, and the G. O. D. Inc. series. He received numerous honors including the Dedalus Award in 1983, the Gold Medal of the West Coast Review of Books award in 1984, the Skylark Award in 1980, and the Hamilton-Brackett Memorial Award in 1979. Exiles at the Well of Souls de Jack L. Chalker
OK, I read this when I was a teen, and was reading it again. Got 15% in and it is just horrible. Chalker is a wonderfully imaginative writer, and I'm no expert on literary style, but this book is just so horribly written. I simply can't continue it. Every page contains at least one sentence so clumsy that even I recognize it as an abomination. GAAAAAAAAAH!
I made the decision this year not to read novels over 250 pages, because I read so slowly, and I tend to lose interest. Plus, a lot of longer novels just really could be cut down a lot. But I started this one, and it actually kept me engaged. Big ideas. The plot certainly has a bit of "Forbidden Planet" element to - not copied at all, just in the same tradition. Anyway, it moves really well and is a lot of fun. No wonder this series was on every bookstore SF shelf I ever saw back in the 1980s. I'll probably read more from this series.… (més)
Fantasy/Sci-fi books are my favorite genre. I particularly like the character of Nathan Brazil and how he ends up on the Well World. There are quite an imaginative number of creatures throughout the book, and I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.
This book was enjoyable to read, but not one I would recommend to others. If you are just looking for something to pass the time, this will do, but there are better books out there.
