- "My grandfather, Abraham Chaim Charlap, gathered his family and left Mariampole in the late 1880s. ... But Grandfather was a scholar and writer as well. He also taught in a Hebrew school. All the while he was involved in editing activities. My grandmother died around the turn of the century and Abraham moved to New York City with his children. There he became heavily involved in the world of Jewish letters, worked with the Hebrew Union Press, and became rather well-known. He collaborated with Alexander Harkavy on a landmark Hebrew-English dictionary and published a variety of other works on both religious and secular subjects. Many of these were published under the pen-name of Abraham Charlap Hyman. That's how the name was changed. However, even among those who use Hyman, the children are usually given a middle name of Charlap."
