A fun read. Kylie and Jake were perfect for each other. Although they started out on the wrong foot, these two people brought out the best in each other. Misunderstandings, secrets and past heartbreaks have played pivotal roles in the makeup in both characters. I received an ARC of Masquerading with the CEO for in exchange for an honest review. A modern day happily every after that leaves the reading feeling good.

I love stories that are set in New Orleans... so I was excited when I saw that this series was set in the Vieux Carré! (Because I saw mentioned in some reviews that people did not know what Vieux Carré was... well, that's the French Quarter, the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans!) Now that I am a New Orleanian, I just love reading these stories because I can picture things happening in all my familiar places. Driving down St. Charles, walking through the residential section of Bourbon, NOMA, etc. And while I knew all the areas that were mentioned in this book, I am not sure that someone outside the area would have the same reading experience. So I would have loved to see more world-building and scene description. I love this city, and there was lots of room here to make readers fall in love with it also. So I hope the rest of the series beefs up the world building and adds more description of the scenery I am growing to love.

As for the story itself - it's got good bones. There is potential here and I am hoping this first book is a set up for the series that will continue to engross readers with tales of witches, warlocks, warmaids, paladins and other types of paranormal creatures. New Orleans is the perfect setting for these types of stories. We have four sisters who are (unbeknownst to them) hybrid witches and warlocks. The girls' mother has kept them ignorant and hidden from the warlocks, who are evil and kill witches. When a tragedy happens, the girls are thrown into this new world and must adjust their beliefs quickly.

Our heroine, Storm Morgeaux, is a contractor. I liked Storm for the most part. I liked that she wasn't the typical female heroine that is uber girly. She is a tough chick and is not afraid to swing a sledgehammer. And our hero, Nathan Davis is a pediatric doctor and paladin. While I liked both of these characters, I wanted more. I wanted more backstory, more details, more personality traits... particularly with Nathan. We know he had a very difficult and abusive childhood, and he lets it slip that he has never received a Christmas gift. There was lots of room there to expound on his past and make him a more appealing, yet tortured, hero. I just like those uber detailed stories which I know I am not usually getting in a short book like this. But the more details there are, the less the dialogue seems stilted and the more I connect with the characters. So even though I liked the characters, I would have liked to see more character development.

Along those lines - I would have also liked a little more explanation. What's a paladin? What's their origin? What powers do the warlocks have? What powers do the girls have as witches? Storm has this special power that may have something to do with rewinding time, or reading psychic residue from items, but neither of those are really explained. What's the deal w/ the mating symbol? How does it work? What effects does it have? I'll stop here because getting a little redundant by this point.

So I think the series has potential, and I will keep reading to see if I get that "more" that I'm looking for.

This is a fun, quick, sexy read. There isn't any real depth to the story, but for those times when you just want something fun and entertaining, this is a good one. I definitely recommend it.

While on her way to the church for her wedding, Kylie finds out her fiancee has been unfaithful with her maid of honor! After a week of wallowing, it's time for her to get on with things so off to Vegas she goes. Hopefully for a little fun before she takes care of the business side of things. Shortly after she arrives she meets Jake Royale but she mistakes him for Macon, the casino's head of security rather than the owner. They both have their reasons for keeping their true identity quiet but when the truth comes out things really get interesting!!… (més)

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Beauty and the Beast all wrapped up as one character that was just too mean to care about. This one just wasn’t for me.

Opening Sentence: For the first time in her life, Brye Morgeaux was no longer the prettiest sister.

The Review:

His Wicked Desire is a paranormal romance set in New Orleans. It is the second novel in the Vieux Carré Witch Sister series. This was kind of a beauty and the beast tale except for beauty and the beast were the same person. I never read the first book in this series so I can only assume that the events that caused Brye’s condition happened in Bewitching the Enemy.

Brye has been a recluse for the past month while she has been healing and dealing with the fact that she no longer has her good looks. Half of her face was burned with acid by an evil warlock. Brye learns just how mean people can be when she doesn’t have her looks getting her what she wants anymore. As a half witch, half warlock, Brye is an abomination among her kind. Warlocks are evil and kill witches for their power in order to prolong their own lives. They certainly don’t have children with witches. The warlock who ruined her face needs something from Brye. The warlock keeps showing up at inopportune times threatening to kill Brye and her family.

Josh has been in love with Brye for a long time. They have been best friends since they were young. After an encounter that left them both thinking the other wasn’t interested in a relationship. Josh has tried to move on but when he sees Brye’s disheartening encounter at the mall he knows he needs to comfort his friend. Brye keeps brushing him off but he can tell something is up. A mysterious man shows up and he can tell she is in trouble.

I had a really hard time liking Brye. She is quite rude and mean especially to the man she supposedly loves. When she finds out she has the power of persuasion, it doesn’t stop her from getting what she wants and it certainly doesn’t stop her from manipulating Josh. She uses her scarred up face as an excuse for everything, for avoiding her family, for avoiding Josh, for downright just being mean to everyone around her. I will say she learns a lesson in beauty, ugliness and persuasion but I’m not sure she learned it soon enough for me to really care.

Josh is a human in a witch/warlock world. There are the Paladins who protect witches but Josh isn’t one. He wants to protect Brye but he can’t because he isn’t powerful enough. I was really hoping something great would happen with him but it never happens. He just ends up kind of being Brye’s conscience. I wanted to like him since I really couldn’t like Brye but for the most part I was just kind of meh towards him.

The writing is good, the story is dark but not incredibly dark. I just didn’t like the characters in this one. It may help reading the first story in this series but I didn’t so some of the backstory was confusing jumping into this one. I did like how this story different with the witches, warlocks and paladins. I just wish I could have seen more of it. Some of the backstory left me in the dark so I felt I was still needing a little bit more when the story was over with. The romance wasn’t very romantic or hot knowing that she was manipulating him.

Overall, His Wicked Desire just wasn’t for me. I didn’t like the characters and had a hard time really getting into this one.

Notable Scene:

She took a deep breath. Open up and let him in. “When I was lost—you were there. When I needed a best friend—you were there. When I lost my confidence and thought I had nothing left to give—you made me feel pretty. When I needed to wallow in self-hatred, self-doubt, pity—you didn’t drag me out of it too quickly. You let me fight my own way back, and it made me stronger, but you were always there. You were like a night-light, guiding me back home. I’ve changed because of you. My looks aren’t everything, as I once believed them to be. You. You are my everything. You even calmed the beast inside me.”

“What are you saying, Beast? I mean, Brye.” He chuckled, then sat up.

She slapped his bicep, then wiped her eyes before any tears escaped. “I’m saying that I’m afraid I’ll lose you forever this time.”
