Really? No Latin names? Nice for a different photo, but for a pocket field guide, use [a:Ian Sinclair|94199|Ian Sinclair|http://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg] instead.

This is an excellent reference work for, as the title indicates, mammals of southern Africa. It is limited in the depth of the information presented and the number of animals covered. 'It is not intended as a scientific text book.' As the Foreword indicates, there are over 290 species of mammals in southern Africa and the author has chosen 83 of the more common ones for this book. The animals not covered are usually not readily seen for many are small and nocturnal.

The book has:
-- An excellent map of the 113 Game Reserves and 11 National Parks in the area
-- Tabular data of 84 of the parks and reserves in which the 83 animals occur
-- The data for each of the 83 animals consists of two facing pages, organized by Order, Family, then Subfamily (which are specified in the Contents):
---- The left page has two photos. The top is of a male and the bottom is of a female. The pictures are very good to excellent.
---- The right page has the detail data, which consists of common name, scientific name, South African name, Description, Sexual dimorphism (differences), Habitat, Habits, Voice, Food, Gestation Period, Breeding (calendar months), Number of young, Mass (in grams and ounces, or kilograms and pounds, as appropriate), Length (in centimeters and inches or feet and inches, as appropriate), Life expectancy, a small paw print(s) and a distribution map.
-- There is a guide at the end, which has two parts:
---- The 'Identi-Index' has a picture of the animal
---- The Spoor Illustrations show the hindfoot, with occasionally the forefoot
-- Among other things, there is a brief Introduction, Acknowledgements, a very good Bibliography and an adequate Index.

I continually use this book when I am reading a book on African big game hunting. I have also made extensive use of it when reading some appropriate fiction, such as any of the works by Haggard.

The way I found out about this book is, I think, quite interesting [Updated May 16, 2011.]:
-- I love wildlife, both plant and animal. I love hunting. I enjoy reading about big game hunting and about big game. I stumbled upon the 'Peter Capstick Library of Hunting and Adventure' series of books. I now own all 14 books in that series. The Wikipedia entry for Peter Capstick mentions the .470 Capstick rifle cartridge, which was named for him.
-- I started an internet search for data on the .470 Capstick rifle cartridge. This led me to The A-Square Company, which is a web site about rifles and ammunition. I now own all 3 books they mention on their Book page.
-- The 2nd one I purchased is "The Atlas of Africa's Principal Mammals", by Stephen James Smith.
-- I kept hoping to find a reasonably priced version of the 3rd one, which is "Any Shot You Want: The A-Square Handloading and Rifle Manual", edited by Colonel Art Alphin. In March 2011, I finally gave up on finding a reasonably priced version. But, from a brief look, this book appears to be incredible and may be well worth the exorbitant price I paid for it!

Over 420 bird species are covered in this highly portable guide. Each is illustrated with one or more photographs accompanied by succinct informative notes. For perfection, it would include a recognition chart to help narrow down a sighting into one of the broad categories into which the birds are divided.
