I had great hopes for this book, I loved the cover of the girl standing by the river. I have severe glaucoma and I found it by browsing through Amazon and checking the "Look Inside"feature. I was very disappointed. I did love the historical pictures of the island and the relatives of the author. But untul I got to page 88. It was with a little girl's of view and the author added her reflections as an adult.
I was very bored by the telling of her story. i think it would been much better if a person sat down with the author and edited the story. The chronology was confusing and I did not know where the author was going. After reading all of the book, there were a few things like social class that had been drilled into her. There were very good people and below them good people and then "common people". Part of the author's family was was very concerned about how something might look to other people. The author seemed to want to get away from those distictions. Reading into what she wrote she did not like big cities but loved the closeness to nature that you can get with country life. The author like rocking chairs on the front porch and home cooking like chicken and dumplings. Her life on the island was stable, serene and secure. Away from that she lost her bearings.… (més)
