Sobre l'autor

Susan Coolidge - pseudonym of Sarah Chauncy Woolsey (1845-1905) - was born in Cleveland, Ohio and spent much of her childhood in Connecticut. After serving as a nurse in the Civil War, she took up writing. By chance, her editor was also the editor for Louisa M. Alcott - famous for her Little Women mostra'n més books - and it is thought that he suggested Susan Coolidge try the same kind of story. Five books about Katy Carr and her family resulted. mostra'n menys

Biografia breu
Sarah Chaucey Woolsey was born into a wealth and influential New England family living in Cleveland. One of her uncles was Theodore Dwight Woolsey, president of Yale College. The author and poet Gamel Woolsey was her niece. Sarah spent much of her childhood in New Haven after the family moved there. She travelled to Europe in 1870–1872 and then settled with her family in Newport, Rhode Island. She never married. She served as a nurse during the U.S. Civil War and then began to publish her writing, using the pseudonym "Susan Coolidge." She's best remembered for the classic five-volume What Katy Did series, but Susan Coolidge also was a prolific writer of verses and short stories for children. In addition, she edited several works including The Autobiography and Correspondence of Mrs. Delaney (1879) and The Diary and Letters of Frances Burney (1880).

I’ve been wanting to get through a few classics this year, and my most recent pick was this book, which I’ve had on the shelf for a while now. A friend recommended it to me, so over the years, I’ve collected the series from second-hand stores; I just never sat down to read them! I found the first third of this book dry and somewhat hard-going, but I’m glad I persevered, because it ended up being a lovely story!

Somewhat reminiscent of Anne of Green Gables, A Little Princess, and Little Women, this book is full of adventures, high jinks, and mischief that children often get themselves into. It’s mostly lighthearted fun; occasionally they are disobedient, but that is rarely tolerated.

I found this a fun story to read, despite the slow start, and I’m glad I didn’t DNF it, as I was tempted to do!

My nostalgic return to children's literature continues with this charming story, very much establishing the pattern later adopted by Anne of Green Gables with its episodic format and likable protagonist. I had no idea, incidentally, that the Americans called a bush cricket a 'katydid' - but that's evidently what it is!

I'm sure this is charming, and it caught my attention on Hoopla as a book I'd heard of. I knew nothing about it, not even that it was a children's book. It was written in 1872 and stars 12-year old Katy, though perhaps by the third book in the series, which this is, she is older. I could see it sparkled. But didn't interest me much unfortunately.

A story about a girl who might not be the most obedient person and might not be the best influence on her younger siblings but who is adventurous and imaginative. This tells how she learned a lesson. Its got a nice style to it and good characterization however it gets very moralistic and smaltzey later. I don't normally care about the message a story might have but after i finished this i couldn't help thinking about it and the more i thought about it, the more annoying the story became. So i've taken a bit off the score for that.… (més)
