Very well written book on the Civil War. Jacob Dolson Cox served mostly in the "West," that being Kentucky and Tennessee. He is remarkably uncritical of other generals with whom he served, and reports some unexpected humorous incidents that had me chuckling. One of the most interesting chapters deals with a harsh winter that his regiment lived through with almost no supplies, soldiers whose shoes wore out and marched either barefoot or with rags wrapped around their feet. My impression of him is that he was a kindly, thoughtful man, very intelligent, and that regardless of the difficulties he faced, he never lost his courage and patriotism. The book is hard to find, but well worth the search.… (més)
