Knitted Animal Friends is a wonderful book for knitters who are looking for more than just a cute softie (cuddly stuffed toy). You get patterns for 13 different animals (cat, dog, horse, mouse, fox, squirrel, hedgehog, pig, racoon, hare, duck, ram and owl). Cute characters indeed, but you can also knit their wardrobe!. Patterns for little shoes, sweaters, pants, scarves, bags, etc. All animals have a standard shape and size, so mixing and matching accessories as well as body parts is possible.

From a technical point of view, the book is also gorgeous : instructions are clear, perfectly organized and displayed. It is most suitable for intermediate and experienced knitters, as it contains more advanced techniques. What I loved the most about it, is how customizable these softies are. Did I mention that each animal has a name and character description?, extra cuteness. A delight to own and play with for sure (not just for kids, they look great as decoration too).… (més)

Many thanks to F&W Media and Louise Crowther for an ARC in exchange for an honest book review of Knitted Animal Friends. My thoughts and opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advance copy.

This is an adorable book full of the cutest animals that any child would treasure for years to come. The designs are timeless. There are 13 animals with the usual mouse and pig to the unexpected like ram and hedgehog. They are really, really cute. The outfits are to die for. There are over 40 pieces and include so many details like little purses, dungarees, cute Mary Jane shoes and French knickers.

One thing to be aware of is that this is not a book for beginners. Don’t expect a step by step how-to for every thing included in these patterns. If Crowther did that you would end up with an encyclopedia. There are just too many techniques used. There is a paragraph on intarsia which probably isn’t sufficient for beginners. What she does do in detail is the actual patterns. The pattern writing is accurate and exact. The shoes fit and the clothes are easily interchangeable. This gives the knitter complete freedom to make any animal with any clothes combination and not worry about having to make adjustments.

Each animal has a complete outfit. There are at least three pieces per animal with details like picot edging, colorwork and buttons. You could probably make less if you choose. Also, because of the same animal base, you can easily interchange any of the clothes with any of the animals. If you made the collection that could mean kids could actually dress the animals how they want, as many different ways they want. This versatility is priceless.

The animals all have the same base giving all the animals a similar look. They have differentiating features that help identify them like mouse ears compared to fox ears. Some people might prefer different looks but this doesn’t bother me at all. I like that as a set they have a unifying look. They look like a complete set.

Crowther lists her preferences for materials used but again, you have to supplement what you don’t know on your own. Stuffing a doll is not as easy as you might think and you can run into more problems than you expect. It can bunch up, ball up, pill, become lumpy and leak through seams. That shouldn’t discourage you from trying these because I think these look pretty special.

This is a beautiful book that won’t disappoint. Crowther has done an exceptional job in both designing and pattern writing skills. The sheer number of patterns allows you flexibility and choice in your own design choices. I think these will make toys that any child would love to have big or small for years to come.

Knitted Animal Friends Over 40 Knitting Patterns for Adorable Animal Dolls, Their Clothes and Accessories by Louise Crowther
Thought this was a cool idea for a book especially because it'd make a perfect Easter gift.
Highly photographed and exquisite color combinations Table of contents and tools, materials and short intro
Essential notes is a must read for this book!
What I loved are the very fine detailed fronts of the sweaters/shirts on the characters: lacy and cabling like you'd make for a human being.
Has one section on standard body parts and how to make them step by step instructions, row by row and some illustrations.
Each animal has it's own chapter where the animal is actually named. There is a brief description about the animal and then the pattern.
Dimensions are discussed, yarn types and how to make them.
Photos are shown along the way with important information to make it easier for you to assemble the animals.
I like that you are encouraged to change the colors of the outfits and mix and match from the given instructions.
Use your imagination! Detail is paid attention with accessories such as small buttons, purses, belts, etc.
There are so many I want to make as gifts and for charity.
I personally think anybody who can knit and purl could make these if you have the patience.
Like that they prefer cotton as it's easier to wash and dry. Small size 2 needles are suggested, pack your patience if you don't this size often.
Some charted designs are included.
Techniques and other useful information and about the author listed at the end.
Such a cool book!
I received this review copy from F+W Media via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
