Other themes include the location of the school in central London, both its gradual growth and periodic consideration of new locations (such as Croydon and County Hall) as well as its temporary relocation to Cambridge during World War II, financial support from foundations (in particular the Rockefeller Foundation) and the government and the internationalism of the student body, especially after World War II. His discussion of the growth of the various departments is very interesting and he highlights both the achievements of LSE as the principal European University focusing on social science during the 20th century and on the role and ideas of its leading faculty members including Malinowski, Robbins, Laski, Popper, Hayek, Titmuss, Mannheim, Oakeshott, Gellner and many more.
In his conclusion, he emphasizes LSE's role as a pioneer in the social sciences and its continued preoccupation with the concept of a good society.… (més)
