Rick Grimes leads his group of survivors away from Atlanta following the destruction of the CDC compound. Following the disappearance of Sophia and an injury to Carl, Rick and the others bunker down at the farm of a veterinarian named Hershel Greene, who is quick to help but appears to hide some secrets. Meanwhile, dissension forms within the group as Shane becomes disillusioned with Rick's leadership -- and how his return has hurt Shane's relationship with Lori.

The first extended season of the long-running zombie apocalypse series, season 2 of The Walking Dead is able to explore more side stories fully while also developing a strong, overarching plot line. Multiple storylines are juggled quite well (especially the turmoil involving Rick, Shane, Lori, and Carl), and each character has their moments to shine. The newcomers of the Greene family are also welcome additions, adding some more contrast to the characters we already know and love (or love to hate). Where season 2 falters, however, is due somewhat to the extended length of the season. Whereas season 1 had 6 episodes to conclude its story, season 2 has 13, and that does cause for some plotlines to run on for longer than they perhaps need to. Still, it is a resounding effort that propels the story forward catastrophically -- and adds new layers that promise great change come next season. Highly recommended.

Content Concerns: The violence is perhaps a bit more frenetic and graphic here, as we get to see some deaths in gruesome detail and they hit harder since we've now had over a dozen episodes to get to know some of them. Characters are killed by both human weapons (from guns and knives to bare hands at times) and from walkers, which present the most gory of the deaths. There's also some sexual content, but it isn't particularly excessive. Language is also present, with about the same range as the previous season (5-10 uses per episode, ranging from milder profanities such as "h-ll" and "d-mn" to a bit more stronger examples like "sh-t").

After awakening from a coma, police officer Rick Grimes finds himself thrust into an apocalyptic world where zombies roam freely. Rick is able to reunite with his family and joins their group, although tensions run hot due to the different characters being forced to live and work with those whom they don't always see eye to eye with. When things take a turn for the worse, the group's dwindling numbers are forced to go on the move in hopes of finding any sign of hope.

One of the most iconic and popular television series of the 2010s, The Walking Dead starts off with a resounding pilot season. Incredible sound design and a hauntingly quiet backdrop make for a very creepy entry into this world of the undead, and as the series progresses, we are able to become more familiar with our cast of characters, written and acted to perfection by a wonderful and diverse cast. The actions all fall in line with what you'd expect from such a variety of individuals in such a trying situation, and you can't help but feel for all of them in this insane world -- well, most of them anyways. It's a strong start that doesn't really fall off at all, helped very well by its short, 6-episode length. Highly recommended for fans of the genre; others, especially the more squeamish, might not enjoy it quite as much.

Content Concerns: The war between the living and the dead is at the forefront, and we get a lot of violence on-screen. Characters, both alive and zombified, are killed by gunshots, beatings, stabbings, and getting devoured, shown to varying degrees (sometimes we see the brutality, and other times we are spared of it). Many times there are shots of blood and some gore, so the more squeamish viewers should go in prepared. There is also some brief sexual content, but it is mostly off-screen or merely alluded to. Language can also be a concern; each episode has roughly 6-10 uses of vulgarity, typically milder language but sometimes the dialogue will feature uses of "sh-t" or "b-tch." One character also uses racial slurs, but he's clearly portrayed in a poor light.
