Using a collection of letters, interviews, military writings, David puts together a detailed account of what the Marines faced in the South Pacific during WWII. I thought Viet Nam was the original jungle war for the US, but after reading this book it clearly was not. All the horrors of jungle warfare for the US happened in the South Pacific well before the US went into Viet Nam. The book reads very long. Even with Japan surrendering, there is no uplifting end. War is hell, period.

Grim but compelling reading about this, the last and certainly one of the most merciless battles of the Pacific War. The battle had everything; mass sacrifice, kamikaze aircraft and ships, a massive amphibious landing and for the first time in the Pacific Campaign, huge civilian casualties. David pulls no punches while documenting this, but to his credit manages to put a human face on the Japanese defenders as well as on the more familiar Americans.
Not a fun read by any means, but a fine account of the battle that probably made the US decide to use the atomic bomb rather than risk a seaborne invasion of the Japanese Home Islands that would probably have been costlier, a point the author examines in some detail.
Recommended.

A convincing historical novel set in dramatic times, greatly enhanced by being written by a professional historian.
The main characters are well drawn and pace is maintained throughout. The military detail is well-judged and the campaign clearly elucidated.
Thoroughly enjoyable and accessible without sacrificing period accuracy. Further good news is that there is a sequel.
