245. Pageant of Life A Human Drama, by Owen Francis Dudley (read 16 Mar 1946) On Mar 11, 1946, I wrote: "Tonight started the fourth of Father Dudley's books. Good." On Mar 16 I said: "This afternoon finished "Pageant of Life" which wasn't as good as "The Masterful Monk." On page 338 of The Guide to Catholic Literature 1888-1940 this note appears: "Story of a young Englishman whose life is shadowed and his conversion prevented by a strange psychological disturbance in his youth. 'The Catholic answer to the questioning of contemporary unbelief.'"… (més)

243. The Masterful Monk, by Owen Francis Dudley (read 8 Mar 1946) On March 6, 1946, I wrote: "Started tonight The Masterful Monk. By far the best of Father Dudley's books. It is the third of his series. It is sweeping in its intense excitement . Deals entirely, of course, with religion." On page 337 of The Guide to Catholic Literature 1888-1940 appears this note: "A dramatic story, having for its theme the modern attack on Man and his moral nature."

241. The Shadow on the Earth A Tale of Tragedy and Triumph, by Owen Francis Dudley (read 26 Feb 1946) This was the second book by Father Dudley that I read. When I finished it my comment was: "I liked it." The note on it set out on page 339 pf The Guide to Catholic Literature 1888-1940 is as follows: "A young English Protestant gentleman, seriously hurt in an Alpine climb, is brought to a nearby monastery where he is cared for by Brother Austin who prevents him from committing suicide in his despair over his helplessness and who brings him to realize his duty to carry on, and in the end receives him into the church. The story is expertly handled."… (més)
