Another flower in Eraly's boquet on India's past history, this one covers the early Indus Valley civilization, the Vedic-Aryan age, the pre-Christian era dissenting movements especially Buddhism, and the Mauryan regime and Kautilya's statecraft.

A massive 1000-page book on the two thousand years of Indian civilization, from mid-first millennium before CE, the post-Vedic period of Buddhism and Jainism, resurgence of Puranic Hinduism after the Guptas, and up to the Turkish conquests in mid-first millennium. This is not so much a history, potted or otherwise, as it is an encyclopedia of the life and arts, literature and language, society and economic relations, domestic and overseas connections, in short an account of Indic civilization in the classical age before the onslaught of the Turks and Afghans. The author has made a heroic effort to cull as much information as possible about this early period, from the meager source material available to the historian - some fragments from Greek and Roman writers, some Buddhist pilgrims' travel accounts, some works from the Sangam era in the south, and cretive reading of the Sanskrit epics and treatrises. Each of the facets is no doubt dealt with in greater depth in other scholarly accounts, but this book provides a convenient summary and list of references for each of a score of specialisations. The author seems to have lavished extra care on explaining the philosophy, and especially the religious life, of India.… (més)

A masterly assessment of the Moghul empire and its aftermaths. This is a companion volume to the author's "Emperors of the Peacock Throne", which deals with the Great Moghuls in detail. There seems to be some confusion about the various editions under which these two volumes have been published, separately or together in one. This volume deals with the economic, social, cultural, and other generalities. Especially useful discussion of the economic aspects: they were never able to install and maintain a sustainable revenue model, and combined with repeated warfare (especially Aurungzeb's decades-long campaigns in the south), they left a bankrupt and devastated country, thus forcting the author to the conclusion (on practically the last page) that British rule came as a salvation.… (més)

An outstanding account of the Great Mughals, from Babur down to the end of Aurangzeb. Of course this is a tale that has been told often, and is based on the chronicles and writings of the age and some time thereafter. Most of these accounts themselves are now available to all readers through the translations of British scholars, and conveniently placed on the worldwide web. The professional historian can go further by accessing the actual letters and notings of the people concerned, in various archives; it is not clear whether the author has gone so far. Perhaps the most interesting, and enlightening, portion of the book is in the last few pages, where he sums up the futility of the last Great Mughal's life, and suggests that the only thing that saved India for the future was the taking over by the British of the decrepit local power.… (més)
